Coral snakes in general only eat other reptiles, making them a bit tricky to maintain. Most people recommend copperheads because they're not usually lethal and antivenom is widely available. I started with an western diamondback because I don't really want a copperhead and wouldn't want to buy one just to get rid of it after I was done practicing. If you really want an elapid, snakes from the genus Aspidelaps (coral and sheild nose cobras) are small and very pretty (one might even say 'cute'), I'm planning on getting a pair in the next year or so. The problem with them is that there IS no antivenom.
