I am sorry Jon, to have used your post as an example. It was unfair of me because of the fact that you are new to the hobby. I really meant to refer to those who have been in the hobby for a while, and should have already utilized obvious resources available. If you had indeed been in the hobby for a while, and had still never taken the time to flip through the most elementary of snake references-- a field guide, I would have stood by my comments.
But, you are new. So, now that fact is so obvious, by all means get a good field guide and check out all the good info. The scientific names will come along at some point, and that is cool enough. You don't HAVE to memorize them, but as a true snake lover, you probably will eventually without even trying.
So please accept my apology, and have fun. Yeah, I can be a hard as$, but the snakes and this hobby are worth it.
By the way, I have a feeling your original post resulted partly from my listing of my captive animals, that was comprised entirely in scientific nomenclature.
So here you go...
Crotalus atrox= Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes
Crotalus molossus molossus= Norther Blacktailed Rattlesnakes
Crotalus tigris= Tiger Rattlesnakes
Crotalus mitchelli phyrrus= Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake
Crotalus viridis viridis= Prarie Rattlesnake
(Sorry, no photo of these right now)
Crotalus viridis cerberus (now just C.cerberus)= Arizona Black Rattlesnake
