In Reply to: Saw something upsetting in the petstore today.... posted by Dracaena on April 14, 2000 at 20:39:50:
It's sometimes a sad fact that too many pet stores are more concerned with profit then ethics. I assure you that had this been the store I own, this event would have had a very different outcome. Most likely the lady and her kids would have gone home empty handed. But you can be sure that they would have at least been educated about the needs of these animals before they left. I turn away at least two buyers every day rather then sentence a animal to a slow death as a toy for small children. Was this store you were in a "Superstore", or a specialty store run by a sole proprietor? It usually makes a difference. Thanks, Ken: Today I was buying some pet food and stopped to look at the reptiles (as always). A lady came in with two little boys and they were looking at all the reptiles, trying to decide which to get. It was obvious they had made no decisions at all before coming--they were trying to decide between an anole and a russian tortoise! The woman told the sales person that she had an old tank outside that they were going to clean and use. She didn't even know that the anoles ate bugs. It was terribly upsetting and she ended up buying one of the small tortoises. I wish the poor thing luck...
