what about those of us in America who do not believe in christianity, or any other religion? Is it fair that our government pays with our tax dollars to support direct violations of the constitution?
The constitution clearly states that the government cannot pick and choose when it comes to religion. It's either support them all (which would include voodoo, Hindu, Bhuddist, Islam, Scientology, Mormons...) or stay out of it.
In 1954 (I'm reasonably certain that was the year) President Eisenhower began a campaign to Christianize this country. He added christian slogans to everything he could, including adding "under god" to the pledge of allegiance. In doing so he violated the constitution, but the courts, being chaired by christians as well, decided to ignore this violation of the constitution, and it's ensuing trampling of the rights of non-christians.
Almost fifty years later, a person with enough power in government finally worked to set things right, and bring things back within the laws this country was founded on.
The majority of America is christian, but that does not mean that christians get to force religion onto others. It's bad enough that any non-christian can't get elected to public office, or that the rest of us have to put up with prostheletizing, blue laws based on christianity, and the christian churches' hands in government.
Remember, that in America the rights of the minority are protected by the very doctrines that make us a free country. Trample them, and you may as well remove all freedom. I'm sure you'd protest if a group of us atheists got powerful enough to make your children listen to and recite "There is no god" every morning at school, and your taxes had to pay for it.
