Your assumption is a good one. Fertilizers are the nutrients that allow plants to grow. (duh?, I know) The point is that the animals consume this stuff normally. The problem is consumption in high consentrations. Remove the situation where this is possible and you remove the risk. Using granular requires a long time for it to soak into the ground. I personally use Miricle Grow for the very that is is in solution and soaks into the ground quickly.
Another option is organic fertilizers (very expensive) Blood meal, Bone meal and chicken sh... for the 3 components that you need.
