Just to add to the confusion... I'm located inland San Diego. What this means is that it is hot an dry. I keep my redfoots on hay with no extra care. I soak them every other day. No problems here and they are thriving.
As far as similar to box turtles, no exception. If you take care of them as you would a boxie they will thrive. Oh, one exception. Heat, boxies don't like it hot,redfoots do.
Btw, if I was going to keep one tortoise it would be a Redfoot.
