Hi everyone,
As some of you may remember, last week I posted a message about what kind of tortoise I could purchase that stayed a small to moderate size, and could live in a humid environment. I have since decided that I would purchase a red footed tortoise hatchling. I found a pet store that has C.B. red foots, who are four months old and eating really well. I am supposed to be getting one this weekend. I have read a few care sheets on them, but I have a few questions that remain unanswered. The first is about feeding. What fruits and vegetables should I feed it? The most I found out by reading the care sheets were to feed a red foot high calcium greens, vegetables, and fruits. Can somebody give me a list of foods to feed them or a website that contains a list? The second is about housing. What substrate should I keep my red foot on? Can I use topsoil, or does it need to be "grassy". Should I keep it indoors or outdoors? Also about housing, what size enclosure do I need? If I should keep it inside, I have a 20 gal. aquarium. Would this work? If not, I can always buy a large rubbermaid tub. If I can keep it outdoors, I have a 3 ft. by 4 ft. pen I can keep it in. Is this large enough for its first year or two (I’m not sure how fast they grow)? And my final question, what kind of plants should I put in my red foots enclosure?
Thanks to everyone who replies. I really appreciate any and all responses.
Steve
