As far as food is concerned if you can't give total control to the animal you have to insure it is getting as balanced a diet as possible. Considering that we really don't know what balanced is, the best way we can insure this is to provide variety. If the animal is selecting what it prefers it is not getting a good variety. So, you have to force variety. Remember, I said you have to provide as much control as possible to the animal.
