Try setting aside a certain time of day or evening when you can feed them by hand (or a few times per week). Set them in front of you, and offer them something in your hand ( prickely pears, or cactus pads work great)in order to bond with them. Once you get them used to seeing you as a "non treat" the event you speak of should subside. This works very well with cb torotises in my experience.

Remember though, G. Sulcata is a dominant and independent creature.If you doing something with it that it doesn't like or stresses it out,it will paint you with its internal re cycled plants as a defense mechanisum.
