: According to the Audubon Field Guide of North American Wildflowers, it was introduces from Eurasia & grows throughout N.A. There are over a dozen different varieties & it's a favorite food of chickens & wild birds. Says it can also be eaten in salads, so might want to try it out.
: I'd say let the tortoises go for it!
Whoops. I think that picure 3 might be a different plant than 1&2, but pictures 1&2 are definitely a species of Richardia - probably either R.scabra or R.brasiliensis.
Common names include Brazilian pusley and more recently, Mexican clover. It's very common in lawns and other disturbed areas in the SE U.S. In fact it's a preferred food item for gopher tortoises (even though both species of Richardia are exotics). All my tortoise species like it. As far as I know, it has no drawbacks.
I believe that the Ca:P ratio and other nutritional data for Richardia is in one of Larry Landers' papers out of Tall Timbers Research Station on the food habits of gopher tortoises.
