According to the Audubon Field Guide of North American Wildflowers, it was introduces from Eurasia & grows throughout N.A. There are over a dozen different varieties & it's a favorite food of chickens & wild birds. Says it can also be eaten in salads, so might want to try it out.
I'd say let the tortoises go for it!
