Opuntia cacti are an excellent source of fiber and many vitamins that all herbivorous and omnivorous reptiles would benefit from. Cacti of the opuntia genus are more commonly known as Prickly Pears. There are a lot of varieties but all are good sources of beneficial nutrients. They are very easy to grow, grow very fast, and recover quickly from cutting. They can be bought almost anywhere that sells plants. Even better, you can buy them at grocery stores, spines already cut out (which is unnecessary for tortoises but convenient regardless), and packaged two to three BIG pads per container. They are inexpensive and can be found in the produce department. I get them at wal-mart supercenter. No, I don't live out in the desert, I live in Alabama where Opuntia do not grow naturally. I'm sure you can find them at a Wal-mart or Kroger or whatever you have where you live. I'd like to hear your responses.
Thanks
Ben Owen
