I would personally not recommend a Leopard tortoise for a climate that is not dry and warm most of the year. Leopards are even more sensitive to humidity than sulcatas, as both are arid tortoises. In addition, the actuality of housing a Leopard indoors for life is not very practical, nor is it very fair for the tortoise if your winters are long. I'm not sure of the weather in Iowa, but I think it's fairly long cold winters, no?

I would really recommend a tortoise more suitable to your local environment, and something more manageable indoors for winter, if necessary.
