Bill,
as the article below explains Hexamita and other nasty diseases are often encountered in newly imported Russian Torts.

The stress of capture and horific conditions, (overcrowding, temperature extremes, lack of food and water etc)the tortoises endure from the time of capture, can bring on these problems.

We don't know the history of this tortoise, if it was a recent import or not.
But 99% of Russian tortoises are wild caught and many are suffering from large parasite loads or have other health concerns.

For this reason it's extremely important that any newly purchased Russian tortoise see a vet ASAP.

Many people fail to do this and many Russian tortoises die as a result of missing that important vet visit.

We will never know what caused the death of the tort in question. But if it was a recent import it could have been a number of things, including Hexamita.

The trade in Russian Tortoises is very sad, thousands die each year. Many who survive capture and make it to the pets store, die within a year of captivity.
Many simply because they were never examined by a vet and problems caught in the bud.

Anyway, sounds like that might be the case here.
But we'll never really know.

Enough doom and gloom!
Here's that article.........
