the natural sequence of nesting consists of finding a suitable spot, then possibly urinating to ease digging, then diggin a pit with hind legs, then laying ALL eggs at once, then carefully covering the eggs back up with as much care as possible.
my suggestion would be to provide your female with several different nesting sites, including different soils, different temps, and different moisture contents. best way to solve it would be to build a fair sized pen in your back yard and let her go there to find her special spot.
randomly laying eggs on the surface of the substrate over a few days time is NOT NORMAL.
good luck and keep us posted,
steve

: We observed many good copulations awhile back and provided a nice topsoil box in the room dedicated to our 2.1 redfoots. She has now dropped 1+2+1 eggs about 3-4 days apart each time just laying them on top of the cypress. No nesting behavior, but eggs appear fertile. No past experience with these or any other torts. Is this common? TIA
