Salmonella comes in thousands of subspecies of bacteria which primarily hang out in the liver, so even if your tortoise doesn't test positive for Salmonella through a vet, this does not mean necessarily that it is Salmonella-free; only that the bacteria was not present systemically at the time. In certain species of reptiles, some strains of Salmonella have also proven to be necessary for digestion of vegetation, so to try and eliminate Salmonella in such animals could prove harmful. No one knows enough about Salmonella and how it interacts with reptilian systems to give simple and definite advice about it, except for one thing. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have your son and all family members wash their hands right after touching this tortoise, if they do. Generally speaking, Russians are not good kids' pets. They have great personalities, but won't stand the roughhousing most kids like to use when interacting with pets.

: hi vince
: the first thing you should do i take your russian to the vet and have a fecal exam to check what parasites it might have, and also get dewormed.
: i bought mine two years ago in the poor thing was infested with worms and a few other things including solmonila. so i would make sure you and your family wash your hands after handling your tort or anything it comes in contact with and you should be okay. look dwn this forumand you can find a few posts that have links on them. i don't remember them offhand. good luck with your little guy brian m
