don't try the set up with the heating pad if you decide to keep the tortoise in the tank.
Using both a heating pad and lamp in a fish tank ( which is small and poorly ventilated)could produce way too much heat.
You MUST always have the heat gradient, with the warmer and cooler sides, difficult to create in a mostly enclosed small tank.
Also, I would lose the sand, it can cause impaction if the tortoise ingests it.
If you can, try the Rubbermaid set up, monitoring temperatures carefully.
If the tortoise is too hot and kept at one constant temperature it can overheat and become inactive.
If it's too cold it won't want to eat and can't digest it's food.
That's why the gradient is so important, it must have the choice of warmer and cooler areas, so it can move about and regulate it's body temperature.
The Rubbermaid set up worked well with Hoku. he still spends thenights in his Rubbermaid.
