Very true.
But urates (uric acid) doesn't smell bad.

Anyway it's no use guessing, we all aggree this creature needs to see a vet first ASAP.
Then we need to determine what it is, turtle or tortoise and what species.
I'm hoping somebody in California will step in and help the poster out.
