: : : : : : : Hello people, i'm new here and i wish to join the forum firstly because I need to know something about tortoises..i had no time to read through the forum, maybe i'm repeting some questions but anyway i'm warried about things that regards my tortoises, now we are in the month of March, my tortoises are still sluggish but sometimes they go around and graze, our garden is full of bright sunlight that from Spring (round about april upwards) there is no shad at all..(right now there are areas with shade but the temperature is good..) I need to know if it is normal for tortoises to continue being sluggish in March?
: : : : : : : My tortoises are kept together but nothing problematic happened, they've been living together for about 5 years now...we never had problems but i need to know if it's advisable leave them together.... since in the other area there is more sunlight than the left area...
: : : : : : : Note: they're checked by the vet when problem arise....however i think the sluggish thing is normal for now...there are sites that say that tortoises become active after/ during the month of april.

: : : : : : What type of critter are we talking about? What are the conditions it is kept in?

: : : : : : Tim

: : : : : All i need to know if i can put him again with the other tortoises, he never had problems with them so far, it is true, that males can't avoid to fight at times, but I can see from his behavour that he seemed happier in the area where the other companions used to graze with him....
: : : : : the garden is big enough to hold more tortoises than the ones i have... and there's a lot of vegitation....i'm just warried because the other part of the garden is a bit shady or let's say just half of it (part sunny and partly shady)...
: : : : : the problem is that i can't determine their species...but their species is only species they import in our country Malta.... I don't know the name of the species...but I think that like other tortoises they need sunlight...(probably they're box tortoises)
: : : : : BTW the temperature in our area, is about 19 degrees celcius during the day, and night time it is about 15 or a bit more..during winter it tend to be a bit less and during somer the temperature is about 40, regarding humid, our country is popular from humid, but my tortoises again never had problems about that......but if this is a problem to this animal please tell me what to do to prevent their exposure to humid areas!
: : : : : Well talk to you soon....Girly

: : : the big male tortoise on the right hand side of my garden is of those species...

: Sounds like you have a spur-thighed also called Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca) He should do well in Malta These tortoises will brumate in the winter months. They are burrowing tortoises and will dig burrows to escape freezing when it gets real cold. They need lots of sun light but they also need a place to get out of the sun if it gets to hot. It is normal for them to slow down during the colder part of the year. They should become more active as it gets warmer. Again they need a place to be in the sun and also a place to be in the shade. I don't think it would hurt to leave them together but I'd keep an eye on them some times a tortoise can get tipped over in combat if it is real hot that can be a problem.
: On another note my son and his family visited Malta last year and said it is a wonderful place to vacation. I hope to visit their some day myself. Good luck and keep us informed on how your tortoises do.

: Tim
Hello Tim
thanks for the information about the tortoises...Yes malta is not so cold, comparing to other countries in europe, however it tends to get very cold in the months of January, this year wasn't as cold, and sometimes they used to move out of the shade and graze, but they slept most of the time...I think a tortoise gets really active when temperatures start rising to 25 to 30...probably in April they start the roam around..i'm fond of them and like to watch them when they are active, i don't like to touch them when they 're hibernating as i'm afraid my tortoises would die, but i'm not sure if a tortoise die when touched while hibernating... but i used to have tortoises that died , because i used to place them from box to box while in hibernation, we had no garden in the other home, and i think tortoises need lots of different vegititation, rather than only lettice, for obtaining vitamins... WE have also trees to provide a bit of shade like giranium grapes etc...and it's true, you won't see them roaming about when the temperature rises up to 40 degrees ..sayin the month of august,... I decieded to put the big tortoise with my other tortoises because the other part of the place was too shady, and i think that it harms the tortoise... without sun a tortoise would get very unactive, it won't eat and will get worse untill it dies... (or maybe that's what i think)...
Anyway, I think i've said too much, probably have repeated the same lines, but my tortoises are ok...the black one has just moved about when i changed the place, it seems happier... my mind is relaxed... btw we have also taken her to the vet, and he gave it medicine....
another question, would peticied, if sprayed only on unreachable areas of the plant, still harm the tortoise? i hope not..
