: I'm a little confused on something here. Can anyone tell me why you are not supposed to use dirt and sand as a substrate for Sulcatas??? If they are kept outdoors, they are in dirt and sand.I live in a region where I cant keep my tortoise outside. Right now I am using calcite sand and it gets very expensive when you have to fill up a 90 gallon tank. Can any tell me what is a good substrate to use?
Hi,
I dont see a problem with sand especially since its such a big part of their natural life in the wild. If in captivity, they develop a fixation on eating it, that would give me pause tho.
I like any kind of hay that isnt dusty with newspaper under it for a substrate.
Clover is high protein and can be dusty so i havent used this.
Hay is good because its affordable enough to change often, its edible, they can burrow in it and it aids in the ability for them to right themself if needed.
