Hey Andy,

Keep in mind that YOU will be the one caring for this thing my friend. Here is my suggestion.

I think you should get a red earred slider (RES), you know , the ones that killed half the population of Madrid in the 60's?? (Just kidding).

It's a common water turtle, you can keep it in a small tank in the house for a while, they are GREAT. And think of the quality time you will get with the little one when you both sit and bask in it's splendor (have the little one wash her hands afterwards).

If I were you, I wouldn't get a tortoise unless it was made of stone. Just my opinion.
