I have recently purchased a 5 y.o russian so any advice you take is still experimental, research is the most important aspect,
although they are small and cute they do need a lot of care and attention,
uvb and temperature control need to be monitered regulary, direct sunlight is best but you may need to get a basking lamp as we do here in the uk where there seems to be more rain then sun although they can do without hibernation ,
from what I have read this will do damage to them in the long run so your own climate is also important as its got to be easier to keep the temp up rather than down
if its any use to you here's a book I bought in the U.S while on holidays "the complete idiots guide to turtles & tortoises" by Liz Palika
published by Alpha books
they have a web page "www.mcp.com/mgr/idiot" Ihope this is of some use to you
best of luck if you do get a russian tort they have so much character: Ok...so I am really doing my homework on this one (remember my Sulcatta incident?) Now, if I buy a Russian Tort...do I have to put it into hibernation? And if so, do I have to do so in the fridge (I read it in a book). And are there any other land torts that I wouldn't have to put into the fridge? I mean....I want to enjoy my pet...and I am afraid I do not have the training to put a tort into hibernation.....I am looking for any advice....I DID NOT buy any torts yet...what does anyone suggest
