I just wanted to clear something up for GK. I am his wife and I just wanted to set things straight about the situation. My husband is extremely upset about what happened so I noticed in his post that the situation raises some confusion.
He also has a herp. license but we do not do in home care on our animals.
We took Ivan to a vet that we really trust. As a matter of fact we took him to the vet monthly for checkups. His fecal test did show worms but he also did have a respiratory problem. At first we were consulted to give him lots of heat and sun and the vet gave him a shot of B12. We took him back 3 days later because his condition had deteriorated. Our veterinarian wanted to take a blood sample and give him a shot of baytril. He was unable to get the blood from Ivan but proceeded to give him the baytril for his repiratory problem.
He suggested that we take Ivan to the University where they have the equipment to do other tests on him and have professors that specialize in exotic animals. We made the appointment for two days later. Well, Ivan died the next day.
I think what my husband was trying to do is warn others of the effect that baytril can have on Galapagos tortoises so this tragedy does not happen to anyone else. This little guy was very special to us and we miss him very much.
