Which state do you live in, this will help us recommend a species that does well in your climate.
Are you able to house the tortoise outdoors year round?
Any tortoise that is bigger than a foot is going to need either a large outdoor or indoor enclosure.
I would think bare minimum 10' - 10', but for a tort that size even bigger would be better.
My juvenile sulcatas( 7") are housed in a 20' - 20' outdoor enclosure. This weekend we're going to be extending it, as it's getting too small.
So let us know how much space you have, and which state you live in.
Most of the tortoises that reach over a foot don't hibernate.So if it can't be housed outdoors during the colder months,you will have to provide an indoor enclosure large enough for a big, active tortoise to spend the winter in.
