A redfoot is a good beginner tortoise for you in eastern MA. They get to be over a foot (about 16 inches), and are relatively hardy. They do not need to hibernate, and can do well in the space you are able to allocate. But even a hardy good beginner tortoise has very specific needs and demands a great deal of care. Check the tortoise trust web site for links to redfoot sites and caresheets. Make sure you know what your responsibilities will be, and that you are willing to assume them. Tortoises need to live in a certain temperature range that is not always easy to maintain in MA. Aside from allocating space in your home and yard, you will need to supply a heat source, maintain a certain humidity level, and nourish your tortoise properly. If this is something you want to do, the effort is certainly worth it!
