: : Yeah, right! The zoos know what they're doing!
: : But of course the private sector doesn't...
: : Also, did we import too many platynota, & that's why there's not enough left?
: The private sector doesnt on this species! are there any caresheets of this species??!!!!
: NO!
: P.planicauda, wasnt realy know until this year! 2 Zoss have kept them and may´be 15 EXPERT Breeder with 20 or more years of tortoise experience,
: nearly nothing is known about this species! so what will happe, 90-95% of the animals will die!
: Platynota: i think we lost the change of getting any! easy reason: there arent realy any left!
: No it wasnt our (breeders) fault! but in planicauda it is! nearly 5000 Pyxis have been exported from madagascar this year!
: the overall population of planicauda was only estimated at around 5000! so,who brought this species to extinction?! the crazy money making exporters and importers! and of course us!
: nearly like 100 years ago with the passenger pigeon and dozens of other species! Human will never learn!
I fully agree that we will never learn! But we can try.
As far as care sheets, I also agree; there haven't been "enough" Pyxis around to warrant them & we don't know anything about their husbandry. Unfortunately, neither do the zoos. They use trial & error same as us, when something works stick with it. Eventually we'll have enough info to make up care sheets. Although even with care sheets we still don't know enough, hence the reason for forums like this. Look at all the controversy high protein/pyramiding stirred up, but that's part of learning. It's difficult to duplicate nature, but we are getting better. Another point, if we leave things to the biologists, we'll end up with some nice preserved specimens to look at & say these used to occur in that habitat, but nobody's seen any for years.
The passenger pigeon is a bad example, we hunted those, & didn't try to breed them. Anyways, hopefully, we'll learn about Pyxis husbandry & not all of them will die.
