Erie is a bit warmer than where I am. Erie also has spotted turtles that are not found where I am. Its not the snow I worry about its the cold.
: I met a keeper in Erie who had outdoor turtles year round, eastern and three-toed boxies (that's WAY out of range for 3-toeds). Large amounts of snow is actually good for hibernation, it insulates the ground better than the same temps with no snow or just ice on top.
: There are eastern painteds in erie as well, I used to drive there regularly to visit my wife when she was my girlfriend and attended school at PSU-Behrend. I might make the pond 4-5 feet deep for them there, though, noting the thick ice on the lakes and such. Would also need a cattle trough heater. Or bringing the painted indoors in winter.
