You won't. Until it is too late......

Barbara. Simple biology. More protein in = more urea for the kidneys to filter out from the blood. High protein = increased urate output. High urate generation is absolutely linked to a number of extremely serious chronic diseases, including visceral and articular gout. Same in humans too. Read any kindney transplant manual and consider the dietary recommendations therein.

I have photographs of the bladders and kidneys of tortoises reared on "monkey chow" diets of the type you are using, incidentall. Not very pretty pictures.
