Hi again, Terry!!
I also have not seen any symptoms of these afflictions in my tortoises despite the use of primate chow as part of their diet... I guess the problem with a discussion like this is we don't want to have any of our living, active, healthy tortoises dissected to find out!!!!

: Ed,
: renal distress ,hepatic disease and dangerously high blood urea levels, are all known to be caused in some instances by a high protein diet.
: Not only feeding animal protein, but also protein rich vegetable matter.
: This is NOT from my experience as I have not seen any of these symptoms in my tortoises, who are on a low protein diet.
: This information comes from people who have dedicated a large part of their life to chelonia.
: Have kept various species for many years, and have the necropsy reports from tortoises who died from renal distress and liver disease.
: their advise is not to feed a high protein diet to grazing herbivores.
: This is the information and advise that I have been following, with good results. So I like to pass this on to new keepers, who like me may not have been aware of these things when they purchased their first tortoise.
: If you disagree with the above, that foods high in protein can cause hepatic (liver) problems etc. Please explain why and give us your advise and experience on feeding these high protein foods. And if they do infact cause any health problems we should be made aware of.
: Terry.
