I'm sure there are lots of wholes in North American science as well...in fact, I'm sure of it. Such as the Crotalus horridus situation.....now, I've just been informed of a Crotalus Ruber situation....Crotalus exsul???? what's that. I just read about it today (not in a journal or publication, but on a forum.
Anyway, Like I said, why not use your expertise to clear things up here, South America, or Africa. I'm sure there are things to find, catagorize, name, study, in these parts of the world as well....and nobody would give you a hard time like in OZ......
Just some thoughts.
