Indeed I was referring to mtDNA "lineages." Sorry about the misunderstanding. Although I understand and agree about "the ability to interbreed as primitive," how can an evolutionary lineage (i.e., species) be defined if there is gene flow (not simply the ability to exchange genes). Even though we "know" gene flow takes place in certain cases (mtDNA), I don't know how some published papers make it past reviewers.
