You shouldn't have to do ventral counts....

there should be an obvious dimorphism. The tail shapes of two similarly sized adults should be noticeably different. If they aren't, you probably have two of the same sex.

Get someone to help you hold them still and look at the tails side by side. The males tail will be longer and will taper more gradually.
