What you are seeing is almost assuredly a local population adapting a pattern that is cryptic within its environment. Being related to the corn its easy to believe this adaptation to be selected for in a similar habitat to that of the corn. Black and red rats coexist in most of their range but where corns dont, blacks maybe adapting to fill that niche.Jeff
