any tips on photographing...

blue beauties or any snake for that matter... i have been trying to get a good color shot with my digi but thus far every pic has been washed out as far as color is concerned. the best i have gotten is this one but it is still washing out her blue making it look more whitish or greyish. do any of you guys have any tips or tricks or lighting info or anything.
