Hi, TP.
I think the East TX corns will turn out to be guttata, and not intergrades, or hybrids. Although I don't have much experience with Texas corns or emoryi, I am very interested. The TX corns look like real corns to me, and I'm starting to like the idea of Emory's rats being a separate species, and not crossing with guttata. Emory's have small clutches of large eggs, like you said, one of the many characteristics making them different. It'll be interesting to see how the DNA tests turn out :)
Also, like Chris said, they start to hang out mainly by water courses in the southernmost and westernmost parts of their range. That is the case with my "intermontane" rats that come from w. Colorado. They mainly follow a couple rivers. I think "intermontana" should be a subspecies of the Great Plains rat and be reclassified, E. emoryi intermontana, in the future. The snakes from the far south should be changed to E. emoryi meahllmorum. And likewise, the TX corns would be a ssp. of corn, E. guttata (ssp).
I'll probably have even more opinions (haha) after I have the Brazos Island rats for awhile this summer. Question: do you, or any of the others, think the TX corns might be the same ssp. as the Kisatchie corn?
TC
: Thanks for the info Chris. Travis currently has two females that he has cooled and hopes they will breed. Any thoughts on the fact that the corns generally have larger clutches. Emoryis tend to lay btween 4-7 larger eggs. The norm possibly being about 6 nice size eggs. I am curious to see the clutch size of the Texas Corns should they breed for Travis.
