I'll tell you what works for me with wild caught blackrats.Hold him behind the head.Don't squeeze!
Keep just enough grip on him that he can't get ya.I usually put their body across my shoulders while doing this.You can tell if they are going to settle down if they are not constantly trying to pull away.If he is really trying to pull away,cage him and try later so he dosen't get hurt.Keep doing this until he gets used to it.5 minutes or so a day.Like I said,this has always worked for me with 6'+ wild caught blackrats,but all snakes are different in demeaner.Just keep feeling him out this way until you feel comfortable with letting him crawl around on you.
The bites are harmless.But it still sucks to be bitten when you want to handle your snake,although I know a few people who get off on it!
