: I am new to rat snake and colubrids. I have kept boas and pythons or many years but colubrids are a new adventure. can i please ask one question, and please do not jump my case but.......what is the difference between rat snakes and corn snakes?
Corn snakes are Elaphe guttata guttata. FWIW the corn is also sometimes called the red rat snake. Most rat snakes are members of the genus Elaphe, though there are some "rat snakes" that are in other genera. Common names (like rat snake) do not have to make taxonomic sense. 8-)
