As Travis says you will get bitten... that's what snakes do.
However rat snakes often do warn you when they are going to bite by going into their S shape and rattling their tails. I have learnt with mine, over time, when it is OK to pick them up and what positions to pick them up from... and yes they are all different.( But hey... at least they are not boring... lol )
Dont hold it and stop it from moving... that is a sure fire way to get bitten as ratsnakes do not like their heads being held. Try picking it up from the middle of it's body and when you have it support it's body and tail so it feels safe.
