make sure the tail is completely shed

My rat snake had a bad shed like that last time. The lady at the pet store told me to really mist down the cage next time it sheds. At the time, there was still a tiny little piece of old skin covering the tip of the snakes' tail. She told me that it was important that that piece came off. She got it off without any trouble, but she was saying that if the tail is still covered, it could hurt the growth of the snake. Can anyone else confirm/deny that?
