In Reply to: Chad, excellent news! (question) posted by Terry Cox on February 21, 2002 at 11:42:42:
: Isn't it a little unusual for ratsnakes to start mating so quickly out of hibernation, although I've had a few that were like that? I especially remember my Persians being like that. My actual question though is about whether the mating actually takes, or are you thinking the snakes will have to mate again later on for it to take? What's your opinion? Thanks,
: Terry
: : Pulled these guys out of cool down late last night and within three hours they were locked up! I hope to be able to produce from them for the first time this year.
Hi Terry,
I thought I would try putting my pairs together this year right at the start, (Asian rats that is). The coxi AND the diones both hooked up! Last year I waited for the diones to have thier first shed before introducing them. Had a little over 65% hatch rate on all eggs. This year I am trying one female right away and will wait for the other female to shed one time. See which animal has better fertility and hatch rate. I am not sure if this mating will do the job or not. I do know that I will be putting them together several more times. I will let you know if they lock up again or not. Interestingly, both the coxi and the diones were locked up for well over 15 hours each. Last year, I observed the diones to mate for just a coulple hours. It will be interesting to see what the turnout is.
