Oops hit the enter button on accident.
Anyways, You are correct about a slum lord. I dont think the guy really cares. I mean come on, you have a snake with mouth rot so bad that the poor things head is all swollen and round looking?? My wife isnt even into snakes, but she is the one who noticed it before I got there. She was looking at some puppies and the snake was across the aisle from the puppies. She came and got me while I was still trying to shake off the initial shock of the prices on the greybands. So if someone like that can look at a snake and say, "is that normal?", the store manager should know about it.
Im sure he knows, and just could care less like you said. He can write it off if it dies, so why take it to the vet?
I am gonna go back in a couple of weeks and see if any of the conditions have changed. I may even take a digital camera and post some of the pics on here. Maybe prospective buyers will see the pics and not go there.
Yeah and the part about people running them over just because they are snakes. My father in law was that way. When I first met him he would kill any snake. He didnt know the difference from a green snake and and copperhead. My little boy is 6 and can tell you just about all the native snakes here in Kentucky. Well he was out with "grandpa" last fall helping with yard work. Grandpa came across a garter snake and killed it. My son flamed him pretty hard and asked him why he had killed a garter snake, and proceeded to lecture him on that a garter snake only eats bugs, frogs, and fish and it would never hurt anyone. Needless to say, now if he finds a snake he will call me to come and id it. Luckily I only live a couple minutes from his house.
Any way, I just hope this guy cleans up his act, not good business for the herp industry.
Sorry this post was so long, but man that just gets my blood boiling!
: Sounds like a slum lord to me. Those snakes aren't going to move at that price and if they die, he writes off $699 for one and $499 for the other. A sincere manager would have known of the conditions and may have even asked for help. Some pet stores start to carry snakes from pressure of customers coming in and asking for them. They don't know the husbandry involved and get into trouble and sometimes someone can go in and show a few things to correct. I don't know of any pet store manager who doesn't know the conditions of the store. He/she is brushing you off hoping you will tire and not pursue anything. Remember though Brian, that this is still viewed as negative publicity by the public even though you're doing good. There is still a portion of the public that doesn't care if a snake dies. They even go out of their way to run one over in the spring when they are coming out of brumation. Thanks for standing up for all of us and good luck. Keep us posted and maybe some of us can help. BTW - Patricia gave you alot of good avenues to pursue and I just wanted you to see first where the manager was coming from.
