: Up here in Canada, the blk. rats tend to be very dark, also in the areas around upper New York state & Pennsylviana I've noticed what mature specimens I've caught in those area were quite dark in color. Quite the contrast to what I'd catch in Missouri, some of which almost resembled an Anytheristc Corn.

there is definitely a tendency for snakes from higher elevations to be darker in pigment to aid in thermoregulation but not always. consider black rats from new jersy. most of the state is barely above, at or below sea level and the black rats from this area are as black as night. jet black. i've seen 2, 2.5 footers down there many times that had already lost most of their pattern and were for the most part black.......comments please dwight.
