Elaphe carinata has been given the common names "King Ratsnake" and "Stinking goddess" (refers to extremely strong musk, I'm guessing). They are from South East Asia, primarliy China. They are very different morphologically from most other Elaphe and most don't consider them "true" ratsnakes. The most striking difference is the fact they have a vertically oriented pupil. I have also heard they eat other snakes in the wild, another very un-Elaphe behavior. They start of as tan babies with widely spaced black crossbars and turn into black and yellow speckled adults. They tend to be heavy bodied and do well in captivity on a diet of rodents (haven't heard much about raising babies, make like reptiles). They have a tendency to be rather mean but I'm sure captive-bred carinatas will tame down nicely. They need a large cage and a warm area like most other larger ratsnakes but will do ok at room temps also. Hope this helps.
