Just browsing and I thought I'd add my two cents!
I observed E. carinata at two places while doing field research in Taiwan during 2000. First, I saw them at my mountain field site, typically in brushy fields bordering forest. The site was about 2,200m elevation and even in the summer, mid August, it could get pretty cold at night. It was reasonably wet also. Very foggy at dawn and dusk most days and a fair amount of rain. The specimens I saw were big snakes too! In addition to carniata we saw E. porphyracea and E. taenuria and another snake, a rear fanged little bugger called Rhabdophis tigrinum (if I remember correctly). Rat snake lovers heaven!
Second I saw them in Taipei where they were being killed to make a drink from their blood. I did not partake!
