Surprise Visitors in Mountain Retreat

We opened our mountain home this weekend and were greeted by two large black rat snakes inside, one about 7 feet long, the other about 6. We chased them both off with exhaust from a vacuum cleaner, but they returned again and again. I suspect a nest, but don't know where to look. Please give me any suggestion on where to look so we can figure out how to protect them.
