For a person just specializing in Texas ratsnakes, they'd have their hands full. According to Alan Tennant, "A Field Guide to Texas Snakes", 2nd ed., 1998, Texas boasts the TX ratsnake, Elaphe obsoleta lindheimerii, the Northern Plains rat, E. g. emoryi, the Southern Plains rat, E. g. meahllmorum, Baird's rat, E. bairdi, and the Trans-Pecos rat, Bogertophis s. subocularis. Plus we can add the possibility of the corn snake, E. g. guttata (Vaughan, et al, 1996).
My interest in the ratsnakes of the Southwest stems from spending a lot of time in AZ and N.M. In a little over five years, I'll be living in AZ, and I want to study certain species in the wild. I already have green ratsnakes, Senticolis triaspis intermedia, which can be found in AZ, and Plains ratsnakes, found from w. TX to Co. and e. Utah, along with a couple milksnake species. I'll probably include extreme w. TX in my field excursions eventually, which might bring a couple more species under scutiny, but my herp room can only hold so many.
I think bairdi is a great species, makes a good pet snake, but I just don't have room at the moment, at least until I cut back on some of the Asians I keep. I'm thinking about it though. Maybe someday.
Until then, I like to learn stuff from you guys. I'd like to hear more about the Mexican subspecies too. Most of these ratsnakes have Mexican forms, too, ya know. There are ssps. of green rats, trans-pecos, and Baird's, and E. g. meahllmorum ranges into Mexico. I don't know how far south obsoleta goes. Anyway, you get the picture, right? Sorry so long-winded. Had a few extra minutes on my hands. Later, bud :)
