...check this out. I'll put a link to the Center for North American Herpetology site (pg?) You can go to the Elaphe section to see what I'm talking about. It seems to me that maybe the academic community is not in agreement on this. Whenever it is divided and confused, it does the same to us. I think this type of thing happens a lot with many different species.
Also, I haven't read the Smith (1994)contribution. I'm not sure if Smith called the Great Plains rat, E. g. emoryi, or E. e. emoryi. Has anyone read that and can comment?
PS: Whoever is writing for CNAH stated in the taxonomic comments for guttata that there was probably even a third species in the eastern TX and LA population. Maybe we could call it Elaphe texianis.
I just think, if we're going to oppose someone's work, we out to have some reasons for doing so. Or, maybe CNAH is simply saying, we don't accept your conclusions. Which conclusion will stand the test of time, and who is it that carries the most weight. Maybe we should take a poll on the forums to see what forum goers think? Should the Great Plains rat be in E. emoryi or E. guttata?
Thanks...later, TMC.
: Hi Terry - I made a post on the forum several months ago and stated the Great Plains ratsnake as E. emoryi. Terry made a post stating what he has just stated on this thread. He gave me a link to contact Dr. Vaughan and she sent me a copy of the work. It definately states that it is E. guttata emoryi. I think it goes back to when it was listed as E. emoryi and we just don't let it go. The same thing happened to the bullsnake. It used to be P. sayi sayi and now its P. catenifer sayi. Alot of people think the bullsnake should still be aligned with the pine snake and they are hesitant to let it go.
