: Thankyou for your reply. The saying really is true: You learn something new everyday. I don't own one of these animals, but I saw one being offered for sale. No price was mentioned. For whatever reason, I have a particular affinty for Madagascar snakes(probably because many if not most are endangered). The picture I saw was of a very arboreal looking black and yellow little guy, with a catsnake-esque. ery strange but pretty animal.
: I'd love to know alittle more about these guys, so anything you do find would be much appreciated. Also, if you could recommend an "ultimate bible" for snake identification I would also appreciate it. I have perused Greene's atlas of snakes, and its very comprehensive, but I am just wondering if there isn't more out there.
: Thanks again

ah ha-that one you saw seems to as listed in this book Stenophis sp. 4 (Domergue, in press)
"One the most conspicuous Stenophis. It is bright yellew with 53 black transverse rings-most of them complete, on back and vent. The single speciem studied by Domergue was captured in the morning, about 50 cm high in a bush in the forest of Beroboka(Morondava region). A speiimen photographed by T. Hafen in the Kirindy forest very probably belongs also to this species"
Assuming of course that we-the readers-have seen that photo. :-)
Seems only way to be sure of which species and ssp
you have is to count the scales and check the hemipenes morphology.
I don't think I'd bother-unless I was a researcher.
I got this book but I got a pair of Madagascar Giant Hognose and there
is shortage of info on those. Glad at the price it helped out someone else.
So to a comprehensive book-I haven't found one yet that is fULLY illustrated
seems I 've had to purchase books by country and region to get photos of all the species and subspecies
as subspecies are sometimes very different in appearence.
I'm going to have to build a bigger library in my house soon.
That's all I can tell you about books-try as we may-there's no book with EVERYTHING
in it. Close but not everything.
take care jo ann
