Rat snake hunting.

Can someone give me advice on finding black rat snakes in the NY/NJ/PA area. I'm more interested in just seeing them than keeping 'em. I rarely see them and want to know if theres a good time of day,weather, spots (up in trees,under logs,other conditions,ect.)
It seems the only time i see them is when its cloudy.
Any help would be appreciated.
