Couldn't get @ your pic, too bad since I LOVE black ratsnakes, but what your descibing sounds identical to a large black rat I caught in Eastern Ontario about 13 years ago in the Kingston area.
I think the furher northern locales produce the blackest ones. Pennsylvania & upper New York state have some pretty dark ones as well. Go to Dwight Goods website to see some nice black rats, ones I would definetly call 'textbook' specimens.
I currently have 2 young black rats, the female's pretty dark but I'm sure the male will end up with white saddle outlines, mind you their not a year old yet so there's still time for them to blacken up.
Thanx for sharing your info, hopefully I'll get to see your pic @ some point.
